Our history

In the late 1800s, Italian immigrants came to work the clay mines and brickworks on the city’s south side. They built homes, parishes and businesses that still stand today, and a community that has kept its traditions for more than a century.

Getting here
The Hill sits just southwest of downtown St. Louis, near Forest Park and the Missouri Botanical Garden. St. Ambrose Church, the heart of the neighborhood, makes an easy starting point: 5130 Wilson Ave.

Parking
Narrow streets, several of them one-way, and very few lots mean most parking is on the street, in front of homes. Give yourself extra time on weekend evenings.

When to go
Many family-run spots keep traditional hours, and some close on Sundays or Mondays. Bakeries and delis are best early in the day.
