The St. Joseph’s Altar is one of the most cherished traditions at St. Ambrose Church, the parish at the heart of The Hill. The parish traces the custom to medieval Sicily. During a drought and famine, people prayed to St. Joseph and promised a feast in his honor if he answered their prayers.
When it happens
The Feast of St. Joseph is March 19, and St. Ambrose holds its altar each March around the feast. Dates for 2027 had not been announced as of October 2026. Watch the parish calendar and bulletin early in the new year.
What to expect
- The altar itself: a tiered display of breads, cookies and sweets built around a statue of St. Joseph. Women of the parish bake cookies, and local bakeries donate bread.
- Food and fellowship: St. Louis Magazine’s coverage of the 2012 altar festival described a Sunday buffet lunch, a dessert table with pignolata, and an Italian Mass, after which visitors could buy the baked goods.
