About

St. Ambrose Catholic Church

St. Ambrose Catholic Church is the parish church of The Hill, founded in 1903 by members of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parish largely to serve immigrants from Lombardy. After the original wooden church burned in 1921, residents funded the current brick and terra-cotta building, completed in 1926.

Architect Angelo Corrubia modeled the Lombard Romanesque Revival church on the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan, and it remains the neighborhood’s best-known landmark. The neighborhood is also home to Rudolph Torrini’s sculpture The Italian Immigrants, honoring the families who settled The Hill.

The parish, led by Rev. John Siefert, holds Mass daily. Per the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Sunday Masses are at 7, 9 and 11am (the 11am Mass on the first Sunday is in Italian), with a Saturday vigil at 4:30pm.
