Gaslight Square-era burger pub at Shaw and Kingshighway since 1972

O’Connell’s Pub sits at Shaw Avenue and South Kingshighway, at the eastern entrance to The Hill. It is one of St. Louis’s best-known burger bars. The pub opened in Gaslight Square in 1961. Jack Parker bought it in 1965 and moved it here in 1972, bringing along its wood panels and mirrors. His son John Parker has run it since 2020.
The draw is the roughly 9-ounce top-sirloin burger, cooked to order. Roast beef sandwiches, onion rings, fried mushrooms, a black bean burger, soups and a house salad with Mayfair dressing round out the menu. The room is dark and wood-lined, with a loyal crowd of regulars.
In September 2026 the owner announced plans to close, tentatively after a final St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, 2027, and the 1905 building is listed for sale. Check before visiting.
