Mexican kitchen with smoked meats, birria tacos and lots of tequila

El Milagro Azteca is a Mexican restaurant on Southwest Avenue in Southwest Garden, just off The Hill. Joe Smugala and chef Carlos Hernandez opened it in 2023 in the space that once housed Taco Circus and Three Flags Tavern. Hernandez draws on his time in Mexico City and his barbecue background.
The menu features street tacos led by birria, al pastor and carne asada, house-made chips and nachos, salsas made daily, and smoked and grilled meats in dishes such as the chimichanga and Burrito Azteca. Critics have singled out the cherry-wood-smoked baby back ribs with a spicy citrus glaze. The bar focuses on margaritas, a large tequila and mezcal selection, draft beer and wine.
The roughly 100-seat interior has a bar and two dining rooms, and a large enclosed patio seats about 80 more. It is open daily for lunch and dinner, with online ordering and reservations.
